School Safety Hints that make a difference

School Safety is a mindset, not an action

I am Scott Parkhurst. I teach US History at Clark-Pleasant Middle School and also am one of the Certified School Safety Specialists in the corporation for about 10 years.  As we wind down another successful school year, it may be a good time to take a look at some of the simple things that we sometimes forget about with keeping our buildings safe and secure for all staff and students.  These are simple things that we sometimes don’t thing about, or possibly think it is someone else’s job to take care of.  It is all of our jobs to take our collective safety seriously.

Being safe is not confined to questioning anyone you see that does not have a school ID or a name badge from the office.  But that is not all.  It also involves many of the little things we do on a daily basis:

1.      When approaching an adult or student that seems like they don’t belong, or looks lost, please ask them an open ended questions to find out what they need.  It is more than likely they are lost and need help finding the office.  Ask them “How can I help you find where you need to go?”  Don’t as a yes or no question.  You can then escort them to the office or, if you feel the need, ask for the help of another staff member.  The front office staff does a great job with getting nametags to visitors.

2.      Please, whenever you are not in your class room, lock your door behind you every time, turn out the lights and your overhead projector.  Not only does this save on electricity, which is paid from the same fund our paychecks come from, but it keeps the building locked down and gives students fewer options to hide out of our view and make poor choices.

3.      Be sure to always wear your name badge around your neck or on your belt.  This is one way we know staff from other adults.  This is the expectation for not only building personnel, but for bus drivers and any other staff that is in our building.

4.      Please keep track of your swipe card/ID.  If you lose it, CONTACT CENTRAL OFFICE THE MOMENT YOU KNOW SO THEY CAN CANCEL IT AND HAVE YOU COME OVER TO CENTRAL OFFICE AND GET A NEW ONE.  Don’t hide the fact you lost it.  It happens.  For safety we need to know as soon as you realize it is gone so we can take steps to secure it from misuse.

5.      Research shows that if the halls and other places in the building are well supervised, it will deter poor choices made by students.  Be sure you take care of your assigned duties.

6.      Don’t prop exterior doors for any reason.  It gives the opportunity for an unchecked person to enter the building unseen.

This list can also serve as a reminder to all staff the importance of school safety.  It is everyone’s job to keep our campus as safe as possible.

Please contact your building School Safety Specialist if you have questions about any safety issue from intruders, to loose carpet.  We want our kids, staff and visitors to be as safe as possible!
